So, 88 Films have unleashed another prime slice of 1980s direct to video (sort of, this film actually played a limited theatrical run on the home of exploitation cinema, New Yorks legendary 42nd Street) cheese in the shape of “Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama” (also known to British audiences as “The Imp”).
This iconic rental favourite came to us avid VHS hounds by way of the prolific producer Charles Band and his Full Moon/Empire stable waaay back in 1988. And it really was a treat for teenage horror fans, featuring not only Michelle Bauer and Brinke Stevens, but Linnea Quigley as well! So, a quick synopsis:
3 typically horny, yet nerdy college boys go and sneak into the sorority house of the Tri-Deltas to witness the initiation of their new pledges (which involves them being paddles by the existing sorority sisters whilst bent over a couch wearing naught but skimpy briefs and very 1980s cut off t shirts. Whipped cream is then also involved). Upon being caught in the act of spying, the boys and the pledges are dispensed to a local bowling alley with a task: Go to the local bowling alley and steal a trophy. This seems fairly simple until the trophy is broken, releasing the demonic imp that was trapped within. As you would expect, this causes people to start being killed, and our heroes must fight to escape and survive.
So, a pretty basic plot, but what do you expect for a film that was shot in 2 weeks, with a full production schedule of under 6 months? But, like most of Charlie Bands “epics”, this film just about works. The combination of hot Scream Queens, cheesy effects, and laughable (sometimes on purpose) dialogue creates a perfect slice of late 80s nostalgia for pretty much any discerning (or otherwise) horror fan. Sure, the acting is questionable at times, and the films sets totally give away the absolute lack of budget (especially in this brand new 2k resolution master), but that is all part of the films charm.
The extras are pretty good as well. The soundtrack has been fully remixed into a 5.1 surround version, with the original 2.0 stereo mix still available. A commentary featuring director David DeCoteau, actress Brinke Stevens, and writer Sergei Haseneczs is pretty good. A 2 hour plus making of is also included, which is a mix between newly recorded interview footage and archive clips (from which it looks like precisely no-one took this film seriously at all). The making of is pretty good, if a tad overlong. The films original trailer is also included.
Image wise, the film looks damned good, all things considered (age, lack of budget, etc), and both audio mixes are more than adequate. It is also available from HMV & Fopp for just £9.99 currently (July 2016), so it is a pretty good bargain as well.
Overall: 4/5 Fiends. Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama is Bloody good fun. (click images to enlarge)
