Midnight Lust is the latest album in the 20 year long odyssey that has been Lesbian Bed Death. But is it any good? Or are the band simply trading on past glories at this point, as many bands with a multi decade career would do? Well, you need to read on to find out…
Well, Midnight Lust comprises a rather appropriate 13 tracks of gothic punk meets hard rock meets metal. And it’s bloody marvellous. Once again, Lesbian Bed Death manage to hit the perfect balance of power, sexiness, and melody. The bands songs just seem to keep on mining a very rich vein of gothic darkness, without tripping over into parody. And that is important, as far too many “horror punk/death rock” bands fail in this.
The subject matter of the albums material ranges from satanic suicide death cults (er, Satanic Suicide Death Cult), feral biker gangs (Roadkill), and ancient evil (The Mummy’s Tomb), to the deeply disturbing activities that take place at a hotel in then bands home town of Stoke On Trent (Horrors Of The Crown Hotel).
As has become almost traditional, the bands line up has changed since the last album, with vocalist Luci4 being replaced by newcomer JJ. And she is excellent. I keep on saying this, but the LBD vocalists just get better and better. JJ has a hell of a voice, and once seen live, her stage presence will not be forgotten as she inhabits each song. Joining her as a newcomer is bassist Leisl Heath, who helps provide a solid rhythm section with long time drummer Aimee Violet. Founding member Mr Peach lays down his usual high quality rhythm guitar parts, and producer extraordinaire Steve Lethal (a long time LBD collaborator) adds lead guitars and synths to the mix.
Speaking of production, the album sounds superb.
Overall, this is another excellent addition to the LBD discography, and one you should be buying. Now!
